Explore Socotra
Socotra...the most rare and strange place on earth. There are said to be 900,000 official islands in the world, but there is one that is particularly unique: the Yemeni island of Socotra, in the Indian Ocean, more than 200 miles from the mainland. Also known as the Socotra Archipelago, it consists of four different semi-desert islands – many described as “exotic” – and is only 250 kilometers long. Socotra is one of the most remote islands on Earth, which means that many are unable to experience its very unique landscape. It is so unique that UNESCO classifies it as “of global importance” due to its exclusive biodiversity. It was designated a World Heritage Site in 2008.
Of the 825 plant species found on the island, about a third can only be found on Socotra, and some have beautiful epic names. It is famous for its dragon's blood trees (Dracaena cinnabari), which look as if they were created by artificial intelligence.
